Yes, we won the SAFF Under-19 Championship at ANFA Complex grounds, Lalitpur on Saturday in an epic battle of proving the supremacy of Nepal over India. It is indeed a proud moment for every Nepali proving our skills and starting a new age of players who are not just physically fit but of international standard.
It is after 22 years that Nepal has finally scored it winning goal. The game was very dynamic where in the first half Nepal made it share of goal by Tej Tamanag in 31st minute. After the goal the Nepal team slowed down where the National striker Bimal Gharti Margar was seen running around the attacking zone alone. It seemed there was pressure for him to make the goal alone but the team was no less interested in doing any effort as if it was an individual game. Later when Gharti was replaced and with a small error in the D-box area of an inexperience player Tsering Gurung resulted in a penalty. The Indian counterpart successfully scored their first goal making it a draw and ending the dream of wining the match. With no hope and both the star strikers out on the parapet, it seemed Nepal had no option except to knell down but the players of Nepali team survived the 90 minutes and the addition time. The matched reached the penalty shoot out where Hemant Thapa Magar, Sunil Bal, Biswas Shrestha, Anjan Thapa and Ananta Tamang converted their spot kicks after goalkeeper Sojit Gurung saved the first shot by Indian forward Moinuddin to lead Nepal to 5-4 victory in penalty shootout. The regular time had ended in 1-1 draw. Sojit Gurung proved to be a hard cookie that stood firm against the confident Indian players.
It was magical as Nepali football team was solely known for its strikers and star players but the final matched proved it wrong where the midfielders and the team held the spirit and pressure of the time. They fought back with the will and energy where they scored all the goals proving skills and quality of standard .
The Penalty striker proved that the Game football is not about a single player, it is about the team performing.
Now after this match I see a great future of the Nepali Team and if this spirit and training keeps on prolonging then they will turn out to be national jewels. The coach Mr Bal Gopal Maharjan Has really trained his players well to withstand the pressure of the game. Football is not a individual game its a team game where all the players need to act accordingly. If only one player makes a mistake the whole team has to suffer the consequence like such if there is only one player performing then the whole team energy dis-balances and the rhythm breaks. so the focus is all about maintaining the rhythm and playing the game with high spirit where the role of the Captain and the coach is highly prized.
Thus, with this game we have proved there are players in the national under 19 team
The government has announced Rs 100,000 each to the team members as cash rewards for winning the regional tournament.
